Get A Tankless Water Heater, Get Increased Energy Savings

Have you ever thought about how much it costs to keep your home’s water heated? Even if your house sits empty most of the day, your storage water heater is still using energy. It burns energy while you’re sleeping, too, and while you’re away on vacation.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, for families that use a lot of hot water — around 86 gallons a day — a tankless heater can be between 8 percent and 14 percent more energy efficient than a standard heater. If your household uses 41 gallons or less a day, a tankless heater can be 24 percent to 34 percent more efficient. That’s because instead of keeping your water heated at all times, tankless units only heat water when you turn on the hot-water tap.

Tankless, or “on-demand,” water heaters also suffer fewer maintenance issues. Tankless water heaters never need sediment removal, and they involve no elements that burn out and need to be replaced. Tankless models take up far less space that conventional hot-water heaters. Finally, they usually last longer.

Tankless models are available with various GPM (gallons per minute) flow rates, and they can run on both electricity and gas. Carefully consider your water needs before choosing a model. For instance, if you will frequently put simultaneous demands on your hot-water heater — running a shower, dishwasher and clothes washer all at once — one tankless heater may not be able to meet your needs. That’s why some households install more than one, or even one for each faucet.
