Questions to Ask When Hiring a Duct Cleaning Contractor
February 16th, 2011Duct cleaning is an essential element of maintaining a healthy home and an efficient HVAC system. Neglecting this maintenance can cause the buildup of dust, germs and debris. This strains your system and leads to low efficiency and poor indoor air quality, one of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s top five health hazards in the country. Professional duct cleaning can not only increase the performance of your HVAC system and extend its lifespan, but improve your health.
Home Comfort Experts has some questions to ask before you have your ducts cleaned so you can be sure the job is done right:
How do I know if I should have my ducts cleaned?
A few signs you may need duct cleaning include ongoing health issues such as respiratory problems, ducts that have never been cleaned, a recently remodeled home, a new furnace or air conditioner, unexplained odors and high levels of dust.
How often should I have my ducts cleaned?
A rough estimate is every three to five years, but each system is different. You may need them cleaned more often if you experience any of the above issues too often. Other things that may necessitate more frequent cleaning are if your home includes pets or children, or is located close to a farm or busy street.
Will you do the work on my ducts yourselves?
It’s not uncommon for companies to use independent contractors for certain specialized jobs, so it’s a good idea to ask who will be working in your home. Home Comfort Experts employs professional indoor air quality technicians year-round who use the HEPA AIRE Duct Cleaning System, which has a powerful vacuum and the right tools to loosen dirt and debris.
Can you quote me a price?
Arriving at an estimate can be difficult before an inspection, but get a ballpark figure before the actual duct cleaning to be aware of any “surprise” charges that may pop up, like repairing damaged insulation. Also, remember that a coupon for a price that seems too good to be true probably is. Hire a company with a good reputation and the ability to do a quality job the first time around.
