Avoid Frozen Pipes Next Winter By Taking Action Now

Many people tend to think that the only way to avoid frozen pipes is by taking action during the freeze itself. While not completely preventable, there are a number of things you can do now to ensure that the next South Bend winter does not wreak havoc on your house.

Cracks and leaks in your foundation can allow cold wind to blow in and freeze your pipes. Sealing up these cracks with caulk or insulation will better safeguard your home. A homemade alternative to this involves pushing snow up along the foundation of your house, which will create a blockade against the wind.

Exposed pipes in your attic and crawl spaces are quite susceptible to freezing, and therefore also need to be protected. Increasing the insulation around them is an easy solution.

When the freeze finally does hit, you should keep your faucets trickling with water. Warm water actually freezes faster because it is more dense, so be sure to use cool water. In deep freezes, a steady drip may not be enough to prevent the pipes freezing, so keep a constant flow going.

While you are away from your house, keep your thermostat set to at least 62 degrees Fahrenheit to help stave off the freeze. If you are gone for months at a time, then you should shut off your water completely and drain your entire plumbing system. By leaving cupboard doors open, you will also let warm air circulate and keep the area above freezing temperatures.
