Tankless Water Heaters Save Energy, But How Much Maintenance Do They Require?
The popularity of tankless water heaters has a lot to do with their ability to save energy. But they also have other features that make them such a popular alternative to the tanked or storage water heaters that have been the standard for years.
One of these popular features is their ability to provide water on demand on a continuous basis. Over the long term, the flow never runs out, though one disadvantage is that a tankless unit sometimes has trouble fulfilling multiple demands for water at one time.
What you may not know is that the maintenance requirements of tankless water heaters are very low as well. With a tanked water heater, there is the periodic draining. If this type of water heater is not drained, the mineral deposits falling to the bottom can present a problem.
Water in tanked heaters have minerals and sludge suspended in the water. When the water is still, these settle to the bottom and build up. Eventually, these deposits can cause corrosion and leaks in the tank.
With a tankless water heater installed, these tiny particles pass right through. There’s no need to worry about any draining with a tankless. Also, there are heating elements in a storage water heater that must be replaced. The new tankless water heaters have no elements. The are equipped with a heat exchanger that is warranted. And, should it ever need service, it is easily accessed by a service tech.
In addition, the tankless heaters mount on a wall, taking less space that a tanked unit. There is easy access any time it is needed. These heaters also last around 20 years. That’s 8 to 10 years longer than a storage model.
The advantages are many and the problems are few.
