Vacation Checklist: Helping Save You and Your Home Energy & Money
Summertime is finally here in the Mishawaka and Columbia City areas. And with summer comes family vacations. So how can you keep your home safe when you are away and even manage to save some money on your energy bills?
Raise the AC in Your Home, Donโt Turn it Off
The first thing many homeowners do before they leave town is turn off their air conditioner. This will make your home humid and stuffy when you return for vacation. Instead, turn it up your thermostat to about 85 degrees. The air conditioner will occasionally turn on, which will help remove the humidity and still save energy while youโre gone.
Double Check that Your Air Conditioner Filter Has Been Changed
Before you leave, it is important to make sure that your air conditionerโs filter has been changed! Changing your homeโs filter will not only help your system run more efficiently, but it will also prevent many problems from occurring while you are gone.
Unplug All of the Appliances
Did you know that even when not in use, appliances that are plugged in still use a little bit of energy? This is something called vampire energy and is why unplugging all of your homeโs appliances helps to save energy. Unplugging appliances that are not in use will also prevent shorts and fires from occurring.
Turn Off Your Homeโs Ceiling Fans
Did you know that ceiling fans do not actually affect the temperature in your home? Instead they move air around and only affect the way you feel. Because of this, there is no reason to keep them on if youโre not there to feel the air moving.
Follow this checklist and you will be able to enjoy a worry free vacation! Remember to call Home Comfort Experts if you have any air conditioner problems this summer.
