If you own a programmable thermostat, congratulations: You’re on your way to saving energy. These devices can help you significantly reduce your household’s energy consumption.

Here are some programmable thermostat tips to help you reach your conservation goals:

• Program your thermostat to set back every time you’re away from home or sleeping for an extended period. Setting back the temperature reaps the greatest benefits when you do it for at least eight hours at a time.
• Don’t override preprogrammed settings too frequently. This forces your heating or cooling equipment to cycle on and off more than it should, which wastes energy.
• Use the “hold” feature when you’re planning to be away for more than a day. The temporary override function is for day-to-day use and is canceled in the next program period. But the “hold” or “vacation” feature isn’t canceled as time goes by.
• Refrain from cranking the temperature up or down. Change the temperature by a single degree if you’re too cold or warm. Your heating and cooling system is like a light – it’s either on or off; cranking the temperature won’t make you feel more comfortable faster.
• Consider zoning controls. You can install multiple programmable thermostats to control the temperature in different areas of your home. This maximizes comfort and energy savings.
• Change the batteries yearly.
