Keep Your Home Warm And Comfortable This Winter

Winter is now upon us, and home comfort is an issue for many homeowners.  You may feel cold drafts no matter how high you turn the heat up, and even though you still aren’t comfortable, your energy bill is sky high.  What can you do to keep your home warm and cozy this winter, without facing astronomical energy costs?

While it’s true your HVAC system consumes over half of the energy used in your home, most homeowners don’t really realize how much is actually going “right out the window” so to speak.  This phrase may be literal in a sense if you haven’t weatherproofed around windows, but there are some things you can do to prevent heat loss while reducing energy costs at the same time.

Here are a few tips to help improve home comfort during the harsh winter months:

1.  Use your ceiling fan.  Many people assume they are only for cooling in warm months, but when switched to reverse mode ceiling fans help push warm air down and circulate it throughout the room.

2.  Set your thermostat just a bit lower.  While it won’t affect your comfort level too much, lowering your thermostat just two or three degrees can make a tremendous difference in how much you pay on your energy bill.

3.  Let the sun do its job.  If you keep your blinds or curtains closed, consider opening those on the south side of your home; the sunshine will help warm up the room.

4.  Don’t skip maintenance.  Just like your car, your HVAC system needs regular maintenance performed by a professional in order to work at peak performance.

Nothing is worse than being cold in your home during the winter months, other than paying high energy bills even though you are uncomfortable.
