Worried About Summer Allergy Season? Here’s How To Improve Your Indoor Air Quality

Some studies suggest that there are up to 72 trillion allergen particles floating in the indoor air of the average home. Many people are focused on outdoor pollen and allergen levels, but overlook the air in their homes during the spring, summer and autumn allergy seasons. Needless to say, if you’re an allergy sufferer, you’ll be suffering if you don’t take steps to control indoor allergens.

With that in mind, here are some steps to follow to reduce the presence of allergens in your home and breathe easier during allergy season:

  • Use a dehumidifier to keep indoor humidity in the optimal range of 30 to 60 percent. High humidity levels exacerbate breathing problems in allergy sufferers.
  • Bust dust by vacuuming, dusting and mopping floors and surfaces in your home at least once a week.
  • If you’re finding your allergies are still bothering you inside the house and you have a lot of carpeted spaces, consider removing the carpets–they are havens for trapped dust and allergens.
  • Leave your shoes at the door, and ask your guests to take their shoes off, too. You’d be surprised how many pollutants and allergens can come in from the outdoors on your shoes.
  • Use HVAC products designed to improve indoor air quality. These include germicidal UV lights, which kill dust mites that may worsen allergy symptoms, as well as electronic air cleaners and HEPA air purifiers.
